Togo of the Kings

Long before German colonization and British and French mandate rule, Togo experimented with different ways of organizing men and land. While looking at these administrations and their hierarchies, it becomes clear that the role played by chiefs and kings is inextricably linked with the cultural history of the land and relations with neighbouring Western African countries. Togo of the Kings explores and documents a subject that is at once spiritual and artistic : how has the imaginary world of ancient kings and chieftains endured in spite of the vicissitudes of history ? Spiritual life is linked to rituals which endow objects and artefacts linked to the exercise of the power of kings and chiefs with significance, resulting in practices which are both original or borrowed from other cultures.

The exhibition takes us on a journey with objects as its starting point ; these have been collected from the living descendants of kingdoms, chieftainships and traditional communities. It also pays a tribute to contemporary creation, shedding light on the work of photographers and film directors, as well as the visual artist Sokey Edorh who examines the recurring symbol of union in the discourse of royal societies and their universe.

This landmark publication will provide an opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of the kings and chieftains of Togo.
